The first dog I owned myself, (the ones prior, were my father's). She and I had a very special bond. She was Miss Personality. Back in 1984,most Vet Clinics didn't have walk on scales, so weights for giant breeds were estimated. Dale suffered from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome - an auto-immune disorder), and was put on gentomycin - a drug rarely used now due to side effects. Her weight was overestimated by the Vet, and she was overdosed with the drug, which caused acute renal failure. Many dogs can survive acute renal failure, but sadly Dale only recovered 10% of her kidney function and had to be euthanised, since dialysis was not available. She struggled so valiantly, but let me know when it was time to let her go. I had so many plans made for our future together, and was absolutely devastated by her death. As with all my dogs, I learned so many valuable lessons - don't guess weight; find out possible side effects of drugs, and watch for them; no Dr.'s, for humans or animals are perfect, and they do make mistakes; your dog only has you to advocate for them, so educate yourself.

Cadey was Dale's litter sister. After Dale passed away, we purchased Cadey - who had been the breeder's pick of the litter. A beautiful girl, but, unfortunately, she had hip dysplasia, so we placed her with my good friend, Barb Goomb, where she lived a very pampered life.
